New quality in laser glass cutting

From all of the materials used in the industry, glass is one of the most popular and hardest to work with. Being hard, brittle, and with little resistance to thermal stress glass is a constant source of challenge.

But what we can do about it when it’s used everywhere from jam bottles to smartphone displays?

We can try a new approach! The ultrashort lasers offer new quality in laser glass cutting. Let’s imagine that laser pulse energy is concentrated within an elongated focal spot, which is 30 times thinner than human hair inside the glass! Microexplosions lead to extreme pressures within material causing controllable microcracking. The pulse delivers up to 100 μJ of energy to a single spot which is enough to cleave up to 2 mm thick glass with a help of burst mode. At the same time laser cutting, drilling, engraving, or etching of glass provides unmatched precision where potential cracking due to the thermal stress is eliminated.

Do you need to cut out a complex shape? Are you working with hard glass? Processing with a femtosecond laser leaves smooth edges, with no taper and minimizing the need for post-processing.

Our Jasper X0 is a suitable choice for everyone who requires high precision and high-speed marking, cutting, welding or even in-volume 3D writing. Based on a truly all-fiber, SESAM-free Fluence Oscillator it features unprecedented stability and a long product lifetime. It provides up to 60 W of average power in pulses as short as 250 fs. At the same time, the built-in burst mode will improve your manufacturing process.

If you need to work with other transparent materials such as synthetic sapphire or diamonds take a look at our applications page.
