Femtosecond laser cutting-edge performance

We like when robustness meets performance, especially in the topic of femtosecond lasers. Therefore, we are happy to confirm reaching state of the art ablation efficiency of 16 mm3/min (0.8mm3/Wmin). Obtained with the Fluence Jasper femtosecond laser for a soda lime glass substrate. Above all, resulting in the finest edge and surface quality, and no damage to the surrounding material.

We do not stop there. Using our THG module you will be able to reach even 10 times higher ablation rates for materials like heat sensitive plastics. Hello OLED displays.

Why femtosecond laser?

Femtosecond lasers bring new possibilities to both industry and science that were impossible to obtain with traditional methods. Those can be used for example to obtain so called cold ablation. This is a physical phenomenon that helps removing material without excessive heating of the surrounding sample. But is this process fast enough to meet the industry expectations? In fact each pulse carries energy high enough to remove only a tiny bit of the material. However, Fluence’s Jasper laser can provide over a milion pulses in one second. Consequently adding up to a volume that is already substantial. In addition, Jasper parameters like the repetition rate, pulse energy, average power and pulse duration can be precisely adjusted. Therefore, making the cold ablation a highly controllable process.

There is no surprise why femtosecond lasers found their way into the micromachining applications, where high process precision and quality are always welcome. Cold ablation also means that thermal effects are limited to a minimum. As a result it is possible to avoid micro-cracks and material weakening. It also allows to work with very sensitive materials like biopolymers and LCD displays.

Femtosecond lasers also bring a huge advantage when it comes to processing materials that were always considered to be unmachinable. Peak power of a single pulse reaches as high as hundreds of megawatts, leading to the ablation even in the most difficult materials like tempered glass, titanium, sapphire and diamond.
